My work is about quiet moments, the times in silence that allow your brain to drift, and the places this can lead. Sometimes what I make is a quiet space for the viewer to contemplate in, at other times it’s a scene where you can observe someone else’s wandering mind. Underlying all the work, however, is an exploration between reality and imagination, between what you see and what you think. I’m inspired by writers like Claire-Louise Bennett and Jeanette Winterson. I am interested in Felice Casorati, Goya and Paula Rego, specifically their ability to mould aspects of their imagination and personal narratives into a convincing visual world. You may understand, for instance, that one human-sized rabbit can't hold another (as in Paula Rego’s painting, ‘war’ 2003) but how is it that we still believe in this painting as a viable reality?
My body of work gives equal weight to the study of both realism (works from life) and imagination. It is not a complete series in magical realism, but the beginning of trying to understand how the two can dance together…
